My Top Ten Books from 2014

-I don't think any of these books came out in 2014, but these are my top 10 out of the 62 books I read last year.

My Top 10 Books from 2014!
1) Happily Ever After: Walking with Peace and Courage Through a Year of Divorce-Kristin Armstrong--This is by far the book that ministered to me the most while I was going through my divorce.  So much so, that I have bought it for other friends going through the same thing.

2) You Learn by Living: Eleven Keys for a more Fulfilling Life-Eleanor Roosevelt--A friend was reading this book and bought a copy for me so we could read it together.  We read it in January and it was an awesome book to start my year off with.  Eleanor inspires people with her words and in the way she lived her life.  She was an incredible woman.

3) Courage and Consequence: My Life as a Conservative in the Fight-Karl Rove--Rove is an amazing man on so many levels.  I thoroughly enjoyed learning more about him in his candid book and about what went on in the Bush Administration.

4) Chasing the Devil: My Twenty-Year Quest to Capture the Green River Killer-David Reichert--Reichert is a man who never gave up on finding the Green River Killer (who turned out to be Gary Ridgeway) and thus bringing some measure of justice and closure for all the victims' loved ones.  This was an inspirational story on not giving up on a just cause.

5) Lone Survivor: The Eyewitness Account of Operation Redwing and the Lost Heroes of SEAL Team 10-Marcus Luttrell--The book and the movie about this true story made both of my Top 10 lists.  An incredible story about some amazing men, true heroes indeed.

6) Smokin' Seventeen-Janet Evanovich--No top 10 list is complete without a Stephanie Plum book on it.  Evanovich's series on Stephanie Plum makes me laugh out loud, reader beware if you are reading this in a public waiting room, people will think you are crazy.

7) Sleepers-Lorenzo Carcaterra--I saw the movie about this years ago and didn't realize it was based on a true story.  I found the book in a thrift store and ended up reading it right away and not being able to put it down.

8) Escape-Carolyn Jessop--This is the book that started all of my research on the FLDS and the many brave women and men who escaped the FLDS's clutches.

9) Frances Folsom Cleveland-Susan Sinnott--I found all the first ladies that I read about this year to be fascinating, but I especially loved learning about Frances because I didn't know much about her and there were a lot of firsts for her and her husband in the White House.

10) Harriet Tubman: The Moses of Her People-Sarah Bradford--A wonderful book about an amazing woman.

My 2010 Book List So Far...Part 2

I visited Reagan's Boyhood home and Eisenhower's home and Museum this summer. So, it worked out well that I was in the middle of reading the above book on Eisenhower. I also bought a book on First Ladies at one of the gift shops, and found out some fun things about Mamie Eisenhower. When she was First Lady she conducted morning business meetings from her bed, and she halted whatever she was doing each day to watch her favorite soap opera (of course, there was no DVR back then ;-))!

Below I have updated my list. The titles in blue are the ones that I've read since the last post.

My 2010 Book List So Far...

In 2008, I joined a group vowing to read 50 books. I was able to accomplish that goal by reading 36 books and listening to 14 on CD. Last year in 2009, I failed miserably. So, this year I'm getting back on the wagon and vowing to do even better than in 2008. My goal is to read 40 books and to listen to 10 on CD.

A lot of the books that I read this year are going to be on the lives of women. Since, I'm going to be teaching a class on remarkable women. I started with Sarah Palin and now I'm moved on to Margaret Thatcher. Right now it is all things Thatcher, because I am fascinated with her life.

I started out reading some easy books on her to get an overview. Now, I am reading one of her two biographies, The Path to Power. It is huge, over 600 pages, but it flows well and is interesting. While searching, I found this review of it.

Here are the books that I have read so far:
1) Going Rogue: An American Life~~Sarah Palin
2) 365 Ways to Live Cheap!~~Trent Hamm
3) Sarah~~Kaylene Johnson
4) Margaret Thatcher, Britain's "Iron Lady"~~Doris Faber
5) Madam Prime Minister~~Libby Huges
6) Margaret Thatcher~~Bernard Garfinkel

My Final Book List for 2008!

I started off the year really strong reading a bunch of books during Christmas break while out of town. I continued at a good pace through the spring and summer and things didn't slow down until election season. Then, it was hard to keep my head above water on anything. I was able to listen to a couple of books on Cd. At the very end, I was determined to finish Gaskell's North and South, which ended up being my last book. Technically, I went a few days into 2009 but I accomplished my 50 book goal which is HUGE for me. The fact that I even got close, is a miracle.

All in all, I read 34 and I listened to 16 on Cd. It became a fun competition which enabled many of us to read more than we normally would have. By joining the 50 book club, I read a ton more than I normally would have, my Mom met that goal and exceeded it and several other friends also went way over it.

Another fun tidbit that I discovered through a friend is that President Bush and Karl Rove also have a book reading competition each year. Rove beat Bush every year but Bush read 95 in 2006, 51 in 2007 and 40 in 2008. I can't fathom reading 40 as President let alone 95. Of course, when looking for the WSJ column I found some liberal mocking Bush about this and he was talking about how he didn't believe that Bush read 95 books in 3 years. I just had to laugh, because he obviously couldn't even read a single column and get the facts straight.

Below, is my final updated list. The titles in blue are the ones that I've read since the last post.

Here are the books that I have read and/or listened to on Cd in 2008:

My Book List So Far...Part 6

A friend and I are in the middle of reading books on the OJ Simpson case. She had never read any on the case and I had a renewed interest since OJ's book came out. We both read his book with the additions that the Goldmans, the ghostwriter and Dominick Dunne added. After reading it and not believing a word OJ said I wanted to do more research on the case.

So next I read Mike Gilbert's recent book, How I helped OJ Get Away With Murder. I highly recommend it. He comes across as very genuine and with nothing to gain by writing the book the way he does. I plan on doing several posts on my "OJ research". Right now I am in the middle of Mark Fuhrman's book, Murder in Brentwood. My opinion of Fuhrman has dramatically changed since learning the truth about him instead of how the Drive By Media portrayed him.

Since, I am in the middle of Fuhrman's book and still in the middle of North and South, I decided to listen to Because They Hate on Cd. It is the gripping and amazing story of Gabriel's life and of the battle we face against Islamic extremists. I am just astonished at what happened in Lebanon and Israel in the 70's and 80's while the rest of the world slept. It is a book that should be read by EVERYONE!! It is a must read!!

As for my book list, you can see that I'm getting close to my goal. I've only got 6 more books to go.

Below, I have updated my list. The titles in blue are the ones that I've read since the last post.

Here are the books that I have read and/or listened to on Cd so far:

My Book List So Far...Part 5

I am so glad my friend encouraged me to join her book group this year. Their goal is to read 50 books a year. For me, that was a huge long shot since my reading had majorly slowed down since starting the blog and other activities. I also used to listen to a lot of books on tape but had gotten out of that habit as well.

All of that to say, I've been able to get back into both the habit of reading and listening to books on Cd in a bigger way than before. One of the biggest things is to allow myself to read lighter books as well as my serious history and political ones too. Before, I would get bogged down in a history or political book and just not read at all.

During my trip, I had some time to read since I had very little computer access. I read Janet Evanovich's latest Stephanie Plum book. I finally finished my Lincoln book, which I would highly recommend. I also read a book on the Elizabeth Smart case and a book about missionaries on the Amazon River whose plane was shot down because they were accidentally thought to be a drug plane.

Right now, I am reading Elizabeth Gaskell's novel, North and South. I talked about watching the movie awhile back and have since re-watched it numerous times. It is a wonderful story, very much along the lines of Jane Austen. Gaskell like Austen is a little hard to dive into at first but I am now into it and enjoying it.

Now, I just have to find the time to do all the book reviews ;-)!!

Below, I have updated my list. The titles in blue are the ones that I've read since the last post.

My Book List So Far...Part 4

It is a good thing I started out so strong on my goal of 50 books this year because I have definitely slowed down. Right now, I am still halfway through my World War I book and my Lincoln book but I have also started the above Tori Spelling book. Again, my eclectic interests are revealed in that I love history and politics while at the same time loving pop culture things, like the life of Tori Spelling.

I didn't even know about the book until stumbling upon a blog via Don. His daughter started a blog and I visited and she was talking about 2 of my favorite topics, American Idol and Beverly Hills 90210. We got to talking and she offered to lend me the book. I was drawn in and I've already started reading it. Hopefully it will get me back on the wagon of reading again and I can get my other half books finished as well.

Below, I have updated my list. The titles in blue are the ones that I've read since the last post.

My Book List So Far...Part 3

I have been increasingly busy lately so I've listened to more books on CD but I did also get 2 other books read. Although, its funny that I now find Grafton almost boring compared to Stephanie Plum ;-). Right now I am reading an introductory book on World War I that is very comprehensive. I wanted a basic book so I could start at the beginning and really get a handle on what the war was all about after visiting the Museum. So far, it is very good.

Below, I have updated my list. The titles in blue are the ones that I've read since the last post.

My Book List So Far...Part 2

Right now I am listening to Facing Terror: The True Story of How An American Couple Paid the Ultimate Price Because of Their Love of Muslim People by Carrie McDonnall on CD. It is an inspirational true story. Here is a brief description:
"Carrie McDonnall is the author of "Facing Terror," which tells the story of her and her husband’s life and ministry together. Carrie served as a missionary to Iraq with her husband, David, aiding the Iraqi people in relief and development work. They desired to bring True Hope to a people who have only known darkness and oppression.

On March 15, 2004, she and her husband were attacked by terrorists along with three of their coworkers on the crowded streets of Mosul. Their three co-workers (Larry and Jean Elliot, and Karen Watson) died that day. David survived long enough to see his wife to safety the next day. Carrie is the lone survivor of this horrific attack."

I am also in the middle of reading Sue Grafton's T is for Trespass. I have finished the Stephanie Plum series except for her latest, Plum Lucky. I am like #500 on the waiting list to get it from the library.

Below I have updated my list. The titles in blue are the ones that I've read since the last post.
