Turn: Washington's Spies

 

The show follows New York farmer, Abe Woodhull, who bands together with a group of childhood friends to form The Culper Ring, an unlikely group of spies who turn the tide in America's fight for independence.--AMC 

-I can't say enough good things about the new TV show, Turn: Washington's Spies.  It is based on a book with the same name, Washington's Spies by Alexander Rose.  Rose serves as a consultant for the show.  I look forward to reading the book.


-As I have mentioned many times before, I love learning about history, and am a war movie buff.  The Civil War and the Revolutionary War are my favorite to learn about because both wars were fought for freedom.

-When I home schooled my kids, we watched a TV series called, Liberty's Kids which was about the Revolutionary War.  It was very well done, and was accurate in the story it told.

-Turn tells a little bit different story, but it still looks at all sides of the Revolutionary War.  What I have been most struck by is that the British had fully taken over whole towns.  For some reason I hadn't pictured that before.

Gilmore Girls!

Warning: This post contains spoilers.  If you haven't seen the show, check it out on Netflix, they just added it.

-Gilmore Girls is one of my all-time favorite TV shows.  I wasn't happy with how they ended the series, but I loved all the previous seasons.

-The Mom, Lorelai, is played by Lauren Graham, and she is hilarious.  I love her relationship with her daughter, Rory.  They love to eat junk food, and Lorelai never cooks.  They bond by watching movies together.  Lorelai is the manager of an inn in the beginning, and then goes on to own her own inn.  It is inspiring to see what she accomplishes.

-You can tell from the beginning that Luke and Lorelai are meant to be together, and when they actually do start dating it is great.  But, what the writers do to their relationship is upsetting, and then they barely show them getting back together in the finale.

-I love Rory's relationship with Logan, and not only was it ridiculous that she rejected his proposal, but instead she went to work on Obama's campaign.  Talk about adding insult to injury.

-Yet, there are a lot of priceless gems throughout the show.  I love the small town that is supposed to be Stars Hollow.  It is the kind of place where most people would love to live.

-Many other characters make the show fun, like Kirk who is eccentric but funny.

-I love this post about the show on BuzzFeed Entertainment.  After watching Season 1, this was their conclusion:

Gilmore Girls is beyond incredible — beautifully written, perfectly acted, and its coffee cups runneth over with charm. Dean is the best boyfriend in the history of TV boyfriends, Lorelai is the mother we all wish we had, Luke is so scruffy and amazing it hurts, Sookie’s giggle could lead to world peace, and I can’t wait to start watching Season 2. I tip my eye-catching hat to you, Amy Sherman-Palladino. You done good.

Downton Abbey

--Downton Abbey is an amazing Jane Austen type TV series.  As soon as I started watching it, I couldn't stop.  I started watching it on Netflix a couple of months before the 4th season started.  I watched all 3 seasons in a short amount of time.

Hell on Wheels!

--Hell on Wheels is my new, favorite show!

--It takes place during the aftermath of the Civil War.  So, it has a historical aspect to it and there is a hot guy with a gun, played by Anson Mount.  What more could you want?

My Summer TV Shows!

--It used to be that summertime was the time to watch re-runs.  Yet, in recent years, cable stations and the major networks now air new shows during the summer.

Gang Related on FOX
--This is probably my favorite show this summer.
--The main character, Ryan Lopez is played by Ramon Rodriguez.  He does an amazing job at mesmerizing his audience, and he's also hot!
--The following is Rodriguez's opening line to the show and describes what the show is about:

My name is Ryan Lopez. After my parents died, the Acostas and Los Angelicos took me in and raised me as one of their own. To protect them, I was asked to go undercover as a member of the LAPD. Now I must walk the line between cop and criminal without being exposed.

--Cliff Curtis and Terry O'Quinn also do a phenomenal job.

Murder in the First on TNT
--I am a Taye Digg's fan, so I thought I'd check the show out.  Diggs and Kathleen Robertson do a great job.  Robertson has grown up since her 90210 days, and is compelling.

--It is a murder show that has a continuing theme, which makes it more interesting than a CSI or Law and Order show.

The Last Ship on TNT
--I'm a HUGE fan of Eric Dane's, who played McSteamy on Grey's Anatomy.  So, thats what led to checking out this show.  I'm a little behind on the episodes, but so far it's good.

The Sixties on CNN
--I realized recently that most of what I know about the 60's (since this was before I was born) is from what I've read.  I haven't seen a whole lot of video of that time period.

--I happened to watch video of right before and after Robert Kennedy was assassinated and learned a lot I didn't know.  It made me curious to watch more from the 60's. I then stumbled across this series and knew I needed to start watching it.

--I am behind on these episodes as well, but what I have seen has been fascinating.  I'm learning a lot.

Gilmore Girls!

Several friends and I are watching the show Gilmore Girls on DVD right now. It is an amazing show. I have several great quotes that I will add to this post later when I get a chance.

TV Smorgasbord!!

Its been a long time since I've talked about tv or movies so I'm past due.

1) The Office--This show is hilarious!! You can't help but love all the different characters on the show. You love Pam and Jim, you enjoy Jim's pranks on Dwight and most of the time you want to strangle Michael for being socially challenged.

2) Lost--I'm getting a little frustrated. Just when they give you answers, they bring up other issues that you don't have answers for. Also, Kate and Sawyer are still separated. Sawyer hasn’t given anyone a new nickname in awhile, and most importantly, he’s been wearing a shirt too much lately ;-)).

3) 24--After the last season being a little disappointing, this year's is back on track. I love the fact that there is a woman president. At first I wasn't that thrilled with her, but when she stood strong against appeasing terrorists, I was impressed.

4) Grey's Anatomy--Once again, like any good show, you love all the characters on it. Its amazing how well Patrick Dempsey carries himself as McDreamy. Who would've thought that the nerd from "Cant Buy Me Love" would end up being attractive enough to have the nickname McDreamy. I'm also really starting to like McSteamy, especially with how he connects with Lexi.

5) Private Practice--This show is a spin-off from Grey's Anatomy. Usually, spin-offs are a kiss of death, but this one has been great.

6) American Idol--The judges made their final decisions last week on who they had picked to actually make it on the show. I haven't picked any favorites yet, but I do have several that I can already tell will be extremely annoying.

7) Amazing Race--This is one reality show that I'd actually like to do. A friend and I have considered trying to enter. This season there is a deaf person on a team. Their team came in first for this leg of the race.

8) Survivor--I don't think I could make it on this show. I wouldn't be able to handle many of the things that they put people through.

Some Best of Clips of "The Office'

1) The Bouncy Ball Clip!~~This first clip is probably my all-time favorite and funniest moment from the Tv show, The Office. It isn't the best video quality but it is just a great moment between Jim and Dwight. Jim is always pulling the greatest pranks on Dwight.

3) The great couple Jim and Pam!!~~They are one of my favorite "real to life" Tv couples of all time. They are very believable and very real and down to earth. They aren't movie star good looking and they are just themselves, honest and have generous hearts. All which is adorable. Throw in some great humor and they make an outstanding couple.

If you haven't watched the Office and you enjoy comedies you need to take the time to do so, it is a great show. It is only the 3rd show that my husband and I both enjoy watching together.

UPDATE:
My MRI went well. I'm still feeling a little groggy from the drugs but didn't panic at all during the MRI so very relieved. Thanks for all your prayers. I have another 45 minute one next Wednesday but don't anticipate any problems.

My Take on the Writers Strike

This is my take on the Writers strike.

First, I think the Writers strike is valid and they should get their demands. The above video explains what they are upset about. While Hollywood is awash in money and actors may make obscene amounts writers often don't get near what they deserve. I am almost always against strikes since I am no fan of unions but this time I think they have a point.

Second, I am concerned about the strike. The thought of some of my favorite shows being disrupted is not fun. Save all the lectures on how I will have more time to read and pursue other worthier causes, they won't help ;-). I'm hoping they come to a speedy resolution and soon.

24 already appears to be taking a hit. This article says this season is being cancelled all together and this one says it is just being postponed.

TV Guide shows the status of some of the popular shows, below is the status of some of the shows I watch:

Grey's Anatomy: Eleven episodes will be produced. Seven episodes have aired, so there are four left.

Lost: Eighth episodes will be produced. None have aired yet, so there eight episodes left.

The Office: Twelve half-hour episodes will be produced. Eleven half-hour episodes have aired, so there is one half-hour episode left.

Prison Break: Thirteen episodes will be produced. Seven episodes have aired, so there are six left.

Private Practice: Ten or 11 episodes will be produced. Six episodes have aired, so there are four or five
left.

One Tree Hill: Twelve episodes will be produced. None have aired yet, so there are twelve episodes left.

Another perspective: This guy points out how many people are being put out of work by this strike. Camera, make-up, hair people are all out of work plus numerous others. He talks about how during these strikes many lose their houses and much more. I think it is a bad deal all the way around and I don't understand why the powers that be don't just pay the writers their due and not make everyone, including themselves suffer.

Grey's Anatomy

Recently a friend talked me into watching Grey's Anatomy. I started watching and was hooked. To be honest I am surprised at how much I love the show. It is so much better than ER and doesn't do any of the politically correct preaching that ER does. It is deeper and you absolutely adore most of the characters in the show, flaws and all.


GG and I were talking awhile back that we were finding it hard to believe that the nerd from Can't Buy Me Love is now supposed to be considered sexy.


Yet any woman who has watched Grey's now understands why Patrick Dempsey is called McDreamy. The transformation was a shock since I had seen him in other things like Sweet Home Alabama and wasn't that impressed. It reminds me of how George Clooney was in things like Roseanne and Facts of Life and you didn't even notice him. Yet he turns 40 and is on ER and all of a sudden everyone is watching ER because of Clooney.

Anyway, its a great show and I just finished Season 2 on DVD. No spoilers about Season 3 since I haven't watched any of it yet ;-)!! I give this show 5 out of 5 stars.
