Courage & Facing Your Fears

God decided I needed a refresher course this past week in facing fear. As I was struggling through it I remembered that quote that talked about how courage isn't the absence of fear but facing it. As I went hunting for the quote I found several other similar ones that were very good. I talked about them on the radio show today and thought they were worth posting. I especially loved the above one by Eleanor Roosevelt.

Simpsons' Dee and Rockin' Girl Blogger!!


My life is a little on the stressful side right now so time to take a break for a little fluff. Wyatt made a Simpsons' version of himself and encouraged all of us to do the same. Going Out on a Limb--Why Bush Will Be a Winner!!

Support for Bush is non-existent among liberals and weak among many Conservatives. I've had to endure "so-called" Conservative blogs that have Ron Paul videos on them comparing Bush to Hitler, the Townhall cartoon page being full of Conservative cartoonists making fun of Bush and numerous abandonments of Bush over immigration. As I've taken all of this in I've been stubborn in my support for Bush. I may not agree with him on all the issues but he has done too many awesome things during his Presidency to deserve the treatment that he now receives.

Through all of this the list of names I have been called is endless. I have been called a whore, an idiot and gotten a death wish all for my support of Bush. I realize its a very unpopular view to take right now, that doesn't make it any less right. So when I stumbled upon Bill Kristol's latest column in the Washington Post, entitled, Why Bush Will Be a Winner, it was nice to see someone else seeing the bigger picture. My take has always been that history will view George W. Bush much more favorably than the polls do now and that is exactly what Kristol points out. Here are his 3 main points that he spends the whole article backing up:
"First, no second terrorist attack on U.S. soil -- not something we could have taken for granted. Second, a strong economy -- also something that wasn't inevitable.

And third, and most important, a war in Iraq that has been very difficult, but where -- despite some confusion engendered by an almost meaningless "benchmark" report last week -- we now seem to be on course to a successful outcome."

An excerpt on the economy:
"After the bursting of the dot-com bubble, followed by the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, we've had more than five years of steady growth, low unemployment and a stock market recovery. Did this just happen? No. Bush pushed through the tax cuts of 2001 and especially 2003 by arguing that they would produce growth. His opponents predicted dire consequences. But the president was overwhelmingly right. Even the budget deficit, the most universally criticized consequence of the tax cuts, is coming down and is lower than it was when the 2003 supply-side tax cuts were passed."
The Supreme Court Justices:
"Meanwhile, 2005-06 saw the confirmation of two Supreme Court nominees, John G. Roberts Jr. and Samuel A. Alito Jr. Your judgment of these two appointments will depend on your general view of the courts and the Constitution. But even if you're a judicial progressive, you have to admit that Roberts and Alito are impressive judges (well, you don't have to admit it -- but deep down, you know it). And if you're a conservative constitutionalist, putting Roberts and Alito on the court constitutes a huge accomplishment."
Terrorism:
"What about terrorism? Apart from Iraq, there has been less of it, here and abroad, than many experts predicted on Sept. 12, 2001. So Bush and Vice President Cheney probably are doing some important things right. The war in Afghanistan has gone reasonably well."
The War in Iraq:
"We are routing al-Qaeda in Iraq, we are beginning to curb the Iranian-backed sectarian Shiite militias and we are increasingly able to protect more of the Iraqi population.

If we sustain the surge for a year and continue to train Iraqi troops effectively, we can probably begin to draw down in mid- to late 2008. The fact is that military progress on the ground in Iraq in the past few months has been greater than even surge proponents like me expected, and political progress is beginning to follow. Iran is a problem, and we will have to do more to curb Tehran's meddling -- but we can. So if we keep our nerve here at home, we have a good shot at achieving a real, though messy, victory in Iraq."
The odds on the Future:
"The truly successful American presidents tend to find vindication in, and guarantee an extension of their policies through, the election of a successor from their own party. Can Bush hand the presidency off to a Republican who will (broadly) continue along the path of his post-9/11 foreign policy, nominate judges who solidify a Roberts-Alito court, make his tax cuts permanent and the like?

Sure. Even at Bush's current low point in popularity, the leading GOP presidential candidates are competitive in the polls with Democratic Sens. Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama. Furthermore, one great advantage of the current partisan squabbling in Washington is that while it hurts Bush, it also damages the popularity of the Democratic Congress-- where both Clinton and Obama serve. A little mutual assured destruction between the Bush administration and Congress could leave the Republican nominee, who will most likely have no affiliation with either, in decent shape.

And what happens when voters realize in November 2008 that, if they choose a Democrat for president, they'll also get a Democratic Congress and therefore liberal Supreme Court justices? Many Americans will recoil from the prospect of being governed by an unchecked triumvirate of Hillary Clinton, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid. So the chances of a Republican winning the presidency in 2008 aren't bad.

What it comes down to is this: If Petraeus succeeds in Iraq, and a Republican wins in 2008, Bush will be viewed as a successful president.

I like the odds."
Kudos to Bill Kristol, for risking the vitriol he will surely receive from both the left and the right. Kudos also to 2 great bloggers that I've recently added to my blogroll who brought my attention to Kristol's column--Burkean Reflections and The Oxford Medievalist.

Bush said the above yesterday in his press conference where he was talking about the successes in Iraq that have already happened as a result of the surge. As Rush said our soldiers are kicking butt over there and deserve our praise. And the quote by Bush just shows why I'm still loyal to him. Agree with him or not he makes his decisions based on principles not on polls. No matter what your views are that philosophy is commendable and inspiring.

All of you know my feelings on John McCain but I'm one of those people who gives praise when it is due. McCain's failings are many but for the most part he "gets" the War on Terror. This quote by McCain deserves our cheer and praise because it is right on the money. I figure even a broken clock is right twice a day!!

The Lack of Compassion is Incomprehensible

I'm still in disbelief over this story, Shoppers ignored woman dying of stab wound:
"Stabbing victim LaShanda Calloway lay dying on the floor of a Wichita convenience store.

Instead of dialing 911, five shoppers stepped over Calloway to carry out purchases — and at least one used a cell phone to take pictures of the stabbing victim."
I have heard of people knowing that someone was being raped or assaulted and not doing anything to aid them and I have never been able to comprehend it.

Where is the compassion? Where is the concern for a fellow human being in need? How could you be more concerned about making purchases at a convenience store than the fact that someone is dying right in front of you?

I will never be able to fathom how this is possible. Life is precious, and the devaluing of it in our society leads to horrific examples such as this one. May God help us!!

The Terrorist Attacks in London

I got a huge smile on my face when I saw this cartoon last night. The reason being, this is exactly what I was thinking. John Edwards says that the war on terror is just a bumper sticker slogan, I think there are many in London that might disagree with him on that.

I haven't had time to delve into this much yet, but Mike has done an excellent post on it entitled, Reality Check: We ARE at War! I referred to it and gave some quotes from it today on my radio show. Check it out!!

Presidential Nominee Profile #1--Fred Thompson


"Republicans need someone like Ronald Reagan, someone everyone knows, someone everyone likes, someone who is conservative and – most importantly – someone who would hold the presidency for eight years. What qualifications would such a candidate need? He would have to be someone who is very articulate and convincing in front of the camera, someone who exudes confidence, someone who naturally appeals to women voters, someone familiar with the news media, someone who has kept very much in the public eye and yet someone who has been away from the mess in Washington for awhile.

Is there such a man? Yes, there is: Fred Thompson. He has been consistently conservative on social policy and his help in getting John Roberts confirmed as Chief Justice to the Supreme Court was critical. Thompson has a record in the Senate and he voted conservative, according to the American Conservative Union, eighty-six percent of the time."--Bruce Walker

I have to say that when I first heard about Fred Thompson's possible run for the White House I wasn't that impressed. I thought, first of all I don't know how impressive this guy is, and if I'm going to get behind an ideal guy who doesn't have a chance I'd get behind Duncan Hunter.

That has all changed for me. I'm not one of these people predicting that he's our next Reagan but I like what I'm seeing. First of all, to know Fred Thompson is to love him, the more I hear, the more I like. Second of all, the fact that he is #2 and even #1 in some polls and has already gotten the backing of some influential people shows that his viability is real. In fact, I will go out on a limb even before he has declared and predict that this race is now his to lose. I think its very likely that Fred Thompson will be the Republican nominee for President in 2008.

--had 3 children with Sarah, 1 whom died in 2002 from an accidental overdose of prescription drugs

My favorite thing about Fred that I have seen so far is his willingness to be candid and not nauseatingly, politically correct. He has supported Scooter Libby without hesitation, he took on Michael Moore and he seems to have the same core today that he had 30 years ago.

Freedom

William Wallace Speech

Sir William Wallace of Elerslie is still regarded as Scotlands greatest hero and patriot.
Freedom is always worth fighting for. As I'm preparing for my radio show I've been reflecting on my philosophy towards life and what inspires me. As most of you know Braveheart is my all time favorite movie. It inspires me in a way that no other movie has come close to. Amazing Grace is the only one that has even gotten close.

"Sir William Wallace of Elerslie, hero of Scotland and true patriot, his desire for peace and freedom united the clans, gained the loyalty of the people, struck fear into his enemies and defied the cruel hand of an evil, waring and invading King - Edward 'Longshanks' Plantagenet I of England."
Braveheart was based on some of the true history of Scotland's fight for independence and the man, William Wallace. The movie isn't completely accurate but does base a lot of it on William Wallace's real life. This site prides itself on telling the true story of William Wallace.

"We fight not for glory nor for wealth nor honours; but only and alone we fight for freedom, which no good man surrenders but with his life."--from the Scottish Declaration of Independence signed in 1320 at Arbroath Abbey on the east coast of Scotland.
One of these days I will do a historical profile on William Wallace, but until then watch the William Wallace speech and be inspired to fight for whatever cause it is that you most believe in.

Freedom Writers


I saw a great movie yesterday. Freedom Writers goes on my list for being one of those movies that empowers and inspires. It is based on the true story of Erin Gruwell, a teacher who reaches out to kids who everyone else has given up on and helps them find their voice. Here is a description of the book on which the movie is based:
"The Freedom Writers Diary is the amazing true story of strength, courage, and achievement in the face of adversity. In the fall of 1994, in Room 203 at Woodrow Wilson High School in Long Beach, California, an idealistic teacher named Erin Gruwell faced her first group of students, dubbed by the administration as "unteachable, at-risk" teenagers. The class was a diverse mix of African-American, Latino, Cambodian, Vietnamese, and Caucasian students, many of whom had grown up in rough neighborhoods in Long Beach. In the first few weeks of class, the students made it clear that they were not interested in what their teacher had to say, and made bets about how long she would last in their classroom.

Then a pivotal moment changed their lives forever. When a racial caricature of one of the African-American students circulated the classroom, Erin Gruwell angrily intercepted the drawing and compared it to the Nazi caricatures of Jews during the Holocaust. To her amazement, the students responded with puzzled looks. Erin Gruwell was appalled to discover that many of her students had never heard of the Holocaust. When she asked how many in her class had been shot at, however, almost all of them raised their hands, and began lifting their shirts to show their scars. This initiated a battle-scar show-and-tell that left Erin Gruwell shocked and inspired to take advantage of the powerful energy she had sparked.

By fostering an educational philosophy that valued and promoted diversity, she transformed her students' lives. She encouraged them to rethink rigid beliefs about themselves and others, to reconsider daily decisions, and to rechart their futures. With Erin's steadfast support, her students shattered stereotypes to become critical thinkers, aspiring college students, and citizens for change. They even dubbed themselves the "Freedom Writers" - in homage to the Civil Rights activists the "Freedom Riders" - and published a book."

Erin Gruwell faced a lot of obstacles, not only did people not support her but many tried to thwart her every step of the way. It was a good reminder for me that when you have a cause worth fighting for you can persevere even if you don't get the support that you would desire. In fact, sometimes you will be abandoned in your cause, that doesn't make it any less worthy.
