The Fairness Doctrine

"The Fairness Doctrine is affirmative action for liberalism."--Newt Gingrich
I haven't bothered to post on the weak attempt by liberals to revive the Fairness Doctrine up until now because I knew it didn't have a chance in he** of passing!! Yet the more it is brought up the more concerned I get about the future. Right now we have enough Republicans to stop it in its tracks and a President that would veto it. Yet, God forbid we end up with a Democrat president and enough Democrat congressmen this could actually become law sometime in the future if we don't speak up.

If you look at this rationally it is beyond absurd. The liberals control 95% of the Drive By Media outlets, they control all the cable news channels except for Fox, they control 95% of the print media but they have panic attacks about the fact that via capitalism Conservatives dominate talk radio.

The bottom line is NO ONE wants to listen to liberal talk radio. Liberals have tried repeatedly and failed. Dennis Miller gives an excellent reason on why liberal talk radio fails, go here to listen to him. He points out that it isn't Conservative vs. Liberal but optimism vs. pessimism and I couldn't agree more. Most liberals are glass half-empty people and the American people don't want to hear ranting from doom and gloomers. This is why I despise Michael Savage and he is in the minority of Conservative talk show hosts. He is extremely negative and offers no positive solutions, no one but angry people want to listen to that.

Newt Gingrich has been irritating me lately in some of his comments but he was 100% right on when he talked about this issue on Hannity and Colmes the other night. He mentioned that if we need equal time in talk radio then we need equal time in Hollywood, College Campuses, the NY Times editorial page, Time, Newsweek.... He brought up how liberals want access to the airwaves whether they've earned it or not and even if no one wants to listen to them. He also said liberals want to drive Conservatives off the airways because they can't compete. He couldn't be more right. If people want to hear what you have to say they will tune in. If they don't, government regulation isn't going to help.

What I find ironic is that one of the promoters of the Fairness Doctrine, Dianne Feinstein argues that talk radio is "dwelling in hyperbole" and "pushes people to extreme views without a lot of information." Yet this Pew Research Center Study poll shows the exact opposite. Rush Limbaugh listeners are found to be the 2nd most knowledgeable after Weekly Standard readers on knowing the most about what is really going on in the news. Here is an excerpt from their study:
"Judged by their answers to three news knowledge questions2, the most informed audiences belong to the political magazines, Rush Limbaugh's radio show, the O'Reilly Factor, news magazines, and online news sources. Close behind are the regular audiences for NPR and the Daily Show."
The most disappointing person in all of this has been Trent Lott. He must be spending too much time with John McCain, prohibiting any kind of free speech is wrong and I can't believe for one thing that Trent Lott doesn't realize talk radio listeners probably make up 90% of his base.

Kudos to Mike Pence for sponsoring the amendment that passed in the House yesterday. He had this to say:
Before the passage of the amendment, which he sponsored, Rep. Mike Pence (R-Ind.), a former full-time radio host, forecast a big majority and took a shot at the Senate, saying: “This House will say what some in the other body are not saying, that we believe in freedom on the airwaves. We reject the doctrines of the past that would have this federal government manage political speech on the public airwaves.”
I get that Dick Durbin, John Kerry and Dianne Feinstein are catering to the Kos kiddies but what is wrong with Trent Lott? If you live in Mississippi, you might want to give him a call and ask.
