Oliver North & The USO

Oliver North is one of those people who had been demonized by the MSM. Since I wasn't paying attention to politics in the 80's I didn't know much of what was going on until I started researching things in the 90's. And I remember being shocked at how great a guy North was after seeing him and hearing him talk for myself. It was one of the times I realized I had unwillingly let the MSM shape my views of someone. All that to say I think North is an amazing man and a Great American.

He had a great show on the other night talking about the different entertainers that have sacrificed time and money to entertain the troops over the years through the USO. It greatly increased my respect level for many of them. I thought I would highlight several of them since we are always bashing Hollywood when they do something wrong. I thought it would be nice to point out when they do something right.

One of the people that most surprised me was Joan Jett. She has been singing to the troops since the 80's. She purposely asks to go to places that aren't as comfortable. She figures the people in remote areas need a bigger morale booster than those in nicer places. And she doesn't mind sacrificing comfort. Pretty amazing.

Everyone knows about Bob Hope. But it is worth mentioning what an awesome support he has always been to the troops. When he died I remember them talking about how many presidents he had met and how many wars he had entertained troops. It is pretty impressive and really instills respect in me for what a great guy he was.

It also is worth mentioning that these entertainers do this at their own expense and don't get paid. Some of the others were Ann Margaret (who I didn't realize was a big star in the 60's & 70's)(reveals my age and that I'm not a fan of old movies), Wayne Newton, Bo Derek and Gary Sinise. My hats are off to them for supporting our troops!!

UPDATE: I am switching computers tomorrow and getting road runner so I may be out of commission for a day or two. Hopefully not longer than that.

Also, check out an excellent poem on Sandy's Blog. It is a must read!!

There are still some entertainers who truly have class, and we need to remember who they were when peace comes so that we can thank them by supporting their shows and recordings.

Joan Jett is one of my all-time favorite rock stars. Not only is she an awesome singer, but a truly genuine and wonderful person.

When I was doing radio in college, me and a buddy of mine got to go backstage with her manager, Kenny Laguna (the guy who wrote Crimson and Clover!), and meet her after a show. I sat there and chatted with them about independent music and radio and she ended up sending me a demo tape of her cover of the Replacements' "Androgynous". What a super lady! Lori Barbero from babes in Toyland joined us as well. I have the pictures, I should really find them...

I got her to sign a pair of jeans I was wearing that day and getting as many of the musicians from the Mill City Music Festival to sign them as possible. She wrote right across my crotch "To Matt, keep on rockin'! Love Joan Jett." They are naturally hanging on the wall behind me.

Very good post. Thanks!

I remember Ann Margeret well. My husband was GaGa over her! :)

But she was a favorite of mine also.

Merry Christmas (belated) and Happy New Year (early)!

I just realized that when I first started blogging I came across daveandres7767's (see his comment above)Blog.

He's a park ranger. The name of his blog is Juicy Fruiter because he loves Juicy Fruit. He's not a political blogger but he runs a pretty neat little blog just the same. Somehow I lost touch. I went there just now to comment and the comment button wouldn't come up. I think I'm having trouble with my browser so I'll try again. He seemed to be a real nice guy and I feel a little bad that I haven't visited his blog in months!

I would appreciate it if anyone here would go to Daveandres776's blog (see link in his comment) and let me know if his comment button shows up. I've tried it twice and it doesn't. Don't know if it's my browser or his blog page.

Thanks in advance. I really liked this blogger and would like to get back to him.

Like jgf I remove my hat as well but especially for North. He really got a bum rap back then by MSM. They were looking for a fall guy and wouldn't let up until they drew blood. Great post LCM.

I went to his blog and I don't see any way to post on his blog. He doen't seem to have a comment section.

Well, I'm back up and running already. My computer guru friend switched everything to my new computer and got my road runner working so I'm all set and upgraded as well.

Sandy: Thanks so much.

Robosquirrel: That is such an awesome story. Increases my respect level for her even more. I love when she sings "I Love Rock and Roll". Great song. You need to post your pictures. I would enjoy seeing them.

Gayle: Thanks. Now that I have found out how popular she was I can't believe I didn't know. A friend of mine said she's going to force me to watch some old movies with her in them.

Ab: Thanks. Yes, he did get a bum rap but I think he is a very great guy.

Dave: I will check out your blog.

Wayne Newton was the first USO show I ever saw (Thanksgiving 1983). He had a book you could sign with a 1 sentence message to family. When he returned to the states everyone who'd put a message in the book had it delivered over the phone, by Wayne personally.

My Dad first thought it was a joke when he got the phone call.

I did watch clips of this special for a few days but missed the program. You are right about some of the ones from Hollywood that put their politics aside to entertain the troops.

My age can be revealed here by saying that it seems like yesterday watching Bob Hope, Ann Margaret and Wayne Newton. Don't forget Charo!! (smiling) Vaguely I remember tuning in to Ollie in regards to the hearings, but like you, I didn't keep up like I do now back then.

Wishing you a Happy New Year early. (smiling)

Hollywood and the entertainment industry, by its very insular, coddling, egocentric, narcissistic, overpaid nature makes many of its drones, feeling guilty over getting so much for essentially nothing, lean so far Left.

Some others, however, seem to be anchored in reality and would include those mentioned in your post. Some others would be Tom Selleck, Bruce Willis, Mel Gibson (you've already written much about him), Charleton Heston, Clint Eastwood and, oddly enough, Shaquille O'Neal, for example.

Don't you just love high speed!!!!
Glad you are back..

Hey, I am kind of not doing well. My back went out again, and this time it is real bad. They have me on that OXYCODONE stuff, and 2 other drugs. I have to have an MRI to see how bad my disks are.
SO, i usually can't sit down forlong periods of time.

Thanks for reminding me that there are some entertainers out there who are honorable.

Happy New Year!

Little Miss Chatterbox said...

Crazy: That is such a great story.

Suzie: Happy New Year to you too!!

BZ: I agree!!

Rebecca: I'm so sorry about your back. I will be praying.

Bstermyster: Thanks for stopping by and your welcome. Happy New Year to you too.

I saw that show, too. I always thought Bob Hope was great! We can see who really does "support our troops". Kudos to Sinise, Jett and all the others!

That Juicy Fruiter guy/girl is just comment spamming tons of blogs with cut and paste comments to get more traffic to his/her blog.

You might want to turn on the graphical captchas so that spammers can't automate blog comment spam attacks on your blog.
